So I was cutting the grass today and suddenly Bubba was trying to get my attention, he was jumping up and down and screaming over the noise of the tractor engine. He wasn’t letting up so I figured I better shut down and see what he wanted.
Him~ “Mommy there is a ssssppider on your back”
Me~ “ok well brush it off for me” (Spiders and bugs usually don’t bother me, and I have tried to teach my kids not to freak out when they see them as well)
Him~ ” I can’t! Its too big”
Me ~ “oh come on, you aren’t afraid of spiders, just brush it off”
Him ~ “I’m afraid of this spider mommy” (as he is jumping around doing a dance very similar to the potty dance)
so…..I look over my shoulder trying to see the little house spider on my back that is freaking my 5 year old out, only to see a HUGE yellow marble shaped thing crawling off my back and onto the tractor seat. It’s been a LONG time since I jumped up that fast, I almost fell on my face trying to get off the tractor.
After the initial shock we scooped it up to take a closer look and although it really freaked me out initially, I quickly became fascinated by its beauty.
My husband said he thought it was some sort of orb weaver so we did some Google research and found a site called “Spiderzrule“. On the site we discovered that this particular spider was called a Marbled Orb Weaver. I was relieved to read that they were harmless and its very rare to be bitten by one.
I considered letting it loose on my porch so we could watch it weave it’s web but I was afraid I would open my door one morning and walk right into a spider web so we let it go in a bush in the back yard. I’m gonna check every once and awhile and see if I can catch a good web, I’ll keep you posted.
