Lately my teenage daughter has caught the baking bug so we made a deal, she could bake if she cleaned up after herself and took photos of her creations to share on my blog.
We needed a dessert to bring to a 4th of July picnic tomorrow so she decided to give an old sugar cookie recipe a patriotic twist!
I have had this recipe for years I got it from a woman I worked with when I was in college, so happy Emilee dusted it off and gave it a shot.
Patriotic Swirl Sugar Cookies Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 3/4 cups sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 egg plus milk to make 1/3 cup
Directions
Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Add oil and blend well with a pastry blender. Beat sugar, vanilla and egg mixture until light and fluffy. Stir in to flour.
Now that you have the basic dough made its time for the patriotic part!
Divide the dough into 3 equal parts then die the dough red and blue, leaving the 3rd part "white" (we love Wilton food color gels)
roll the dough into 1 inch balls
combine 1 ball of each color to form a larger ball
roll the tricolored ball in to about a 1/4 in thick rope
Coil the rope
Dip the edge in sprinkles
Bake at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes
Enjoy!
WHAT a clever idea and they must have been fun to make too!
I've rustled up patriotic oreos – oreos dipped in white chocolate and covered in funfetti. I know, wicked. But terribly good!
Congrats on the cookies they look great!
